<fn fn-type="deceased" id="fn1"> Deceased author footnote #39

In order to link the footnote to the correct author, the id associated with the fn tag matches that in the xref tag used in the contrib element: <xref ref-type="fn" rid="fn1">&#x2a;&#x2a;</xref>

See #19 for order of footnote symbols used. The symbol used in the contrib element is attached to the author name in the author list on the print product and PMC display. This is not displayed in the eLife html. The corresponding symbol is used in this list as a label and is displayed on the print product and PMC display. This is not displayed in the eLife html. The text is contained within a para tag and is always "Deceased" (no punctuation and no additional text:
