FontEditors like FontForge and FontCreator make onboarding and collaborating with others difficult and time consuming.
Proprietary Mac only editors like Glyphs also make collaboration difficult, and it's closed-source nature slows innovation and automation in font creation tooling.
I personally consider the Google Fonts project to be in Beta an unable to fulfill it's full potential until we have a good collaboration and Git friendly source format and a DX focused open-source cross-platform editor. We haven't even begun to see what a mature OFL ecosystem is capable of yet and I want to push things forward.
