May I ask what your ex_cldr version is? I just tried that configuration on the current release (2.39.2) and it compiled without issue.

Is there some change that for the example here you changed the module name from your actual module? The message seems to suggest an issue compiling __MODULE__ which is why I ask.

not sure what you mean about me changing the module. i haven't done anything but change my elixir and erlang versions from 1.16 and erlang 26 to what i said above. I've also removed the _build folder to recompile.

OK, I've found the source of the error. It's in ex_cldr_dates_times. I'll try and resolve it tonight my time (UTC+10) but it may not be resolved until my morning.

Just updating progress. The root cause is that some date time formats (and date time interval formats) can have a variant format. I wasn't account for that when I generate the locale json files. So the issue only shows up when you use a locale that has these variant formats (in your case, at least en-CA has variant formats).

The solution is to:

• [x] Fix the parsing of the locale data and the generated JSON locale files
• [x] Fix using the variant formats in ex_cldr_dates_times for date time formats
• [ ] Fix using the variant formats in ex_cldr_dates_times for date time interval formats

I'm close to completion on the last item, then I need to add a bunch of tests. I expect to complete this later tonight my time (UTC+10).

I've published ex_cldr version 2.40.0 and ex_cldr_dates_times version 2.20.0 that fix this issue.

I'll leave the issue open until you confirm that all is OK on your side. Thanks for your patience. This ended up being a deeper rabbit hole than expected - but the result is more robust code in ex_cldr_dates_times, especially for intervals.

I then removed the _build folder, did mix compile again, still same issue.

Okay, I'm getting a warning when I added:

config :ex_cldr, force_download: true to config.exs. Still get the same error when using "en-*" and the version for Cldr is still the same.

Apologies, wrong option name. It should be:

config :ex_cldr, force_locale_download: true

I'm working on the assumption that, for whatever reason, the updated locale files haven't been downloaded. That option will force them to be downloaded.

One more thing, are you able to share the config for otp_app: :rust_asia?

If you have a :data_dir configured instead of the default, the locale files will be considered fresh if their CLDR version matches. The changes I've made don't change the CLDR version. So in that case, ex_cldr would not consider them stale and would not download the new ones.

Did you by any chance see the locales being downloaded again when you upgraded? There is a log message at the info level for each downloaded locale.

Okay, still the same version after fixing the config, but now it seems to compile after using the force_locale_download.

Thanks for the feedback and glad progress was made. The symptoms you describe are consistent with the data_dir config option being set rather than the default. Does that accord with your configuration?

You can check by calling App.Cldr.__cldr__(:config) - would you mind pasting the results here?

The only open issue is what triggers _build/dev/lib/app/priv/cldr as the location for the locale data. The default would be _build/dev/lib/ex_cldr/priv/cldr. It's totally legitimate to store the local files wherever you want. The only issue being that they won't be wiped out when a new version of ex_cldr is configured. And thats the source of the issue.

Which is why I'm hoping you can confirm that there is somewhere a data_dir config option somewhere in your config.exs that points at the directory. Thats the only question open in my mind.

You should now be able to remove the :force_locale_download config option now too since they are downloaded. That option is only required in the situation that ex_cldr doesn't know that the data is stale.

I'm going to close the issue as completed. I will improve the docs noting that in some cases, adding :force_locale_download may be required. And I'll continue to work out what your locale files are being stored in an unexpected place (might be to do with the :otp_app config option).
