4.1.1 running Responsive theme. Installed plugin, activated it, viewed my page while logged in as admin, "edit" appears nowhere on the screen at all. Uninstalled.

This might be an issue with the theme, and not using the correct hooks/functions. Do you have the wp-admin bar showing on the front end? If so clicking edit from that should enable the front end editor.

If this isn't working correctly, how do you make it theme compatible? Is there a dev guide?

Your theme may have the admin bar disabled by default. I'm pretty sure that needs to be enabled.

I am using the Stat Fort theme from Envato. So far, the only theme I have been using that allowed for the "Edit" element to be visible is the Twenty-Fourteen theme. In the case of the Stat Fort, the admin bar is available. Also: I don't see how one could add a new post in this environment; or make changes to the meta box fields of a given post.
