The combat overlay doesn't originate from the total grid size of the creature, instead picking one of the tiles (bottom right tile if there is no direct middle tile) to act as a source. This makes it not reliable for moving characters of those sizes as at least two sides will be wrongfully shorter in range, possibly all sides for a creature that is 3x3 or larger.
