If it supports HTTPS it would be an option. However @elrido has to say whether we really need this. Currently there are not so many users and opening issues for questions is okay too.
@rugk:
Hey! Yes, it supports HTTPs and I have been considering for a long period of time to disable non-HTTPs entirely. Most of my IRC servers run self-signed certificates but the main one uses Let's Encrypt. However, I have to make a small adjustment very soon. However, SSL is available and it is recommended. The port used for SSL is 6697
.
Anyway, yeah. It was just a small thought I had when I combed the repo and site for any way to keep in touch.
EDIT: For convenience I also maintain a webIRC client at the following addresses:
The webIRC client is running ‘The Lounge’. I have tried KiwiIRC too, but I settled with the former.
You seem to use Cloudflare - at least for the webIRC clients. Here is an article, which explains why Clouflares SSL is basically flawed: https://scotthelme.co.uk/cloudflares-great-new-features-and-why-i-wont-use-them/ All in all it's SSL with MITM build-in.
@rugk: yes, I am aware of that and I am in the process to discard of CloudFlare for those subdomains due to exactly the reasons listed by Mr. Helme. I just used it during the test stage. I will replace CF with LE, cheap as I am! 😁
Thank you @rugk for bringing it up, though. I would likely have waited a lot longer before I replaced it, had it not been for your reminder. I will go ahead and make the switch today!
I think it would be easier for some users if IRC was not used as you miss most of messages if you don't use shell/bouncer. XMPP would have history depending on the server and client, but I think the easiest to setup would be https://gitter.im/ as everyone here probably already has GitHub account and I think it would be just a few clicks to create a group.
@rugk:
I have now cleansed both of the subdomains from the MITM'd SSL which CloudFlare was gracious enough to give me 😏 You can see the current results here:
Here is a screenshot for the SSL test results of webirc.k0nsl.org
:
It all appears to be working fine on my end. Thank you @rugk for motivating me to make the change.
PS:
The logs generated by the web server are all fed to /dev/null
.
PSS: If the webIRC client was down earlier today, or just now, it's because I am upgrading to the latest version and also Node.js at the same time. I was running a rather old version of ‘The Lounge’.
@k0nsl That's nice. It's good that I am a motivator for you... :wink:
@Mikaela Well... https://gitter.im/ is not really something self-hosted and I think that's not suitable for ZeroBin users. :wink: If we would not care about this we could also use Slack... :expressionless:
So let's rather care about it. :wink:
I am just reluctant, because I there is still one unanswered question yet: Do we really need an instant messaging platform for the development and/or support of ZeroBin? I mean GitHub should be enough for us, should not it? What's the advantage of using IRC/XMPP/Gitter/whatever compared to the current state?
Re: IRC - Especially with the naming discussion we currently have, I can totally see the need for some real time communication. I will try to be available throughout this day and late in the evening after I have returned home.
I personally prefer asynchronous communication and, work related, can't usually be available during workdays. I'll try to check my mails once per day and usually answer any ZeroBin issues ASAP, but I would only want to guarantee to check my mails once per week.
But I'd never want to stop anybody to chat. I just will not be able to participate much in it.
@Mikaela Well... https://gitter.im/ is not really something self-hosted and I think that's not suitable for ZeroBin users. :wink: If we would not care about this we could also use Slack... :expressionless:
Slack requires different registration and two factor authentication for every project that you are part of, so I think it's a little bad example.
I am also against small IRC networks as there is no guarantee they will be there in the future and if you wanted to attract ZeroBin uesrs who also use IRC, you would go to freenode or at least OFTC.
However I think XMPP which you can self-host would be a better idea as anyone can host a server and connect to your self-hosted conference server no matter which XMPP server they use. They would also get a little scrollback every time they connected.
@Mikaela:
I can understand your concern about small IRC networks. When I first tried to see if there was already a IRC channel available for ZeroBin, well, Freenode was the first place I looked.
I don't see why my network would suddenly just disappear, short of me kicking the bucket. In that case, I still have a contingency plan that would be activated. I think the probability of that happening, though, is in the low-percentage region. But theoretically anything could happen :)
Anyway, I leave the offer available for those who might be interested in the idea. The network has all the usual type of services available for handling channel registrations, securing one's own nickname and your IP/hostname is obfuscated upon connecting to the network; a custom hostmask is set when registering the nickname. That can be changed by submitting a request for a vhost to me via PM or by requesting one via HostServ
.
I used to offer the possibility to use ZNC operated by me for people who used my IRC network, but as demand was so low due to being a very small network, I stopped advertising that fact. However, that is still possible upon request.
Have a great Friday, all.
What was the conclusion? Which network and what channel?
Not really a conclusion. Let us know in the new repo if you have suggestions that you want to have mentioned on the project page.
I'll reopen the issue for those that would like to discuss it here.
Why not also move this issue to the new repo? Currently it is missing there...
Ok, in all honesty: I was too lazy to copy over the whole conversation. :grinning:
So I think we can just continue in a new issue: https://github.com/PrivateBin/PrivateBin/issues/24
Everybody wanting to see the previous replies has to go here.
(So closing this issue would be good...)
ok, on to the new issue tracker at https://github.com/PrivateBin/PrivateBin/issues/24
Hello,
I tried searching for any information on your site and on the repository itself if you had any means to chat, typically something like IRC. However, I couldn't find any clues as to where and on which network you might be. If you don't have an IRC channel I would be honoured to provide one for you on my own IRC network. Would anyone be interested in that?
You can check out my IRC network by connecting round-robin
irc.k0nsl.org
. I have very few users and they all hangout in#k0nsl
. At any rate, it was just a thought. Let me know what you think :)
