Feature reques: Standalone app mode #43

Is is possible to have a standalone Desktop+ app which does not using overlay method? It might be easier to adjust between clarity and performance of a game capture by using steamvr resulotion setting. For example I am using Pimax 8kx, the single eye 4k resoultion is too high for some game capture (In fact I don't even run game itselft at such a high resolution). But if I lower the VR Compositor resolution for Deskop+ game capture, I will get whole the dashboard and other desktop overlay blurred.

Thank you for your efforts, I really like desktop+ better than any other similar apps. :D

There are currently no plans for a standalone version. Major reason would be the need of implementing everything the SteamVR overlay system gives me myself.

I don't think the game capture itself nor the rendering of the Desktop+ overlays specifically should have a massive impact on adequate GPUs. Though I haven't tested things in the regions the 8kx appears to render at (and even can't, as compositor is capped at 1.5x). One thing you should try out if you haven't yet, is SteamVR-VoidScene. It's a tool that improves performance for these kinds of scenarios. Not sure if it's fully compatible with Pimax, though. I feel like the more effective method using debug commands may not be. And don't forget you can adjust overlay rendering quality in the SteamVR settings too.

Apart from that, I don't think Bigscreen was that bad at what it did last time I used it. That'd be a freely available standalone application. With all bells and whistles turned off it probably won't get much faster than that.

Thank you for the reply. You are right, I have tried SteamVR-ForceCompositorScale and SteamVR-VoidScene and lowered the resolution, it did not help much. I am using 'HMD mode' and trackIR together to play in VR (like a fake VR), the HMD overlay start flickering/stuttering when I enlarge the overly size to fill the view. Maybe it is the game update rate issue not related to the overlay.
