The download link at https://ess.r-project.org/index.php?Section=download is for a 2018 version of ESS whose build breaks when using emacs 28.2 due to issue #1085 . Just FYI, I guess. I don't know what the update policy is for ESS, but now that I've tracked down the error to that issue and found that it was fixed, it seems relevant to report that the newest tar file release breaks out of the box when compiled with a new emacs.
