API in docs is failing to build even though docs say passing #51

see title. Not sure why this is happening, but it does underscore the fact that we need to get the doc build CI working

just as a note, the build works on my local machine, so this has something to do with the way the environments / dependencies are built by readthedocs

this is resolved by recent force-pushes to main
