Create redirect rules #343

Using the redirect spreadsheet Jan. 7th Launch tab, create redirect rules for site launch. There are three specific categories of redirects needed for launch:

The specifics of these categories are described below.

Redirect Directories

The following are directories on web.library that need to be rewritten to a single page on the new site or redirected to another site altogether. I have enumerated them below and they are highlighted purple in the spreadsheet linked above:

The remaining redirects are a one to one match, old site url to new site url. These can be found in the spreadsheet linked above. They are not highlight any specific color.

Existing Redirects

@jamesbiasemory attached is a text file containing the existing redirects currently running on the Woodruff site. We'll want to include these to make sure they still redirect to corresponding pages on the new site. In theory, they should redirect to what will become old URLs which will then redirect to the new site (if that page is available).

Overlooked Items

This brings up two things we overlooked:

  1. We moved static copies of exhibition pages that tolibaries.emory.edu and need redirects for those
  2. If we don't include a redirect in place for an abandoned URL, visitors will land on a 404 on web.library.emory.edu rather than on libraries.emory.edu.

Rewrite Rules Needed

  1. For exhibition pages, we'll need something that matches the following: ^exhibitions/(.*)$ https://libraries.emory.edu/exhibits/$1, essentially redirecting anything that sits under exhibitions on web.library.emory.edu to the exhibits directory on libraries.emory.edu while keeping the rest of the path.
  2. For abandoned URLs, we'll want to redirect all unaccounted URLs on web.library.emory.edu to the new homepage athttps://libraries.emory.edu. Usually, this can be a rule for the contents of the entire root directory placed at the end of the list of rules, allowing all other rules to catch first. If the URL has no rule, it goes to the new homepage.

I have created the redirects file and uploaded it to the server.
I will test it when we get back from the break, if that is cutting it too close contact me via slack and between xmas and new years I can test it.

News and Events for now these should all redirect to https://scholarblogs.emory.edu/woodruff

Library Simplified /research-learning/research-tools/library-simplified/* --> libraries.emory.edu/research/index.html

The remaining pages do not have a place they redirect to. @kristianserrano perhaps you can comment here and remind me what we decided about these types of pages? I think it was that they would just go to a 404 page.

@rosy1280 as I recall, we had accepted that there would be some abandoned pages that bring up a 404. I'm assuming the list at the bottom is among those.
