2017 Christmas Tree Permit Requirements Hood River and Barlow Ranger District’s Mt Hood National Forest EFFECTIVE DATES, NOVEMBER 1, 2017 THRU DECEMBER 24, 2017

You must have this sheet in your possession while cutting and transporting.

WHERE TO CUT YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE Your Christmas Tree Permit allows you to cut a Christmas tree in designated areas on the Mt. Hood National Forest. You may cut within the entire Hood River and Barlow Ranger District, noting the restrictions below. SIZE OF TREES Only trees 12 feet in height or less may be cut. A permit for trees taller than 12 feet may be obtained from the Hood River or Barlow Ranger District office for an additional cost. Please call ahead for more information. CUTTING THE TREE Cutting the top out of a tree is prohibited. Please cut all tree stumps so they are less than 6 inches high and remove all green branches from the stump.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS Please abide by all roads or trail restrictions and closures. There must be another tree, free to grow within 8 feet of the one you want before cutting. You must have a Sno-Park permit on your vehicle at State Sno-Parks after November 15. Attach and validate your Christmas Tree Cutting Permit and secure around your tree prior to leaving the area. A maximum of five Christmas tree permits per household can be issued.

AREA CLOSURES
Trees may not be cut within Wilderness areas, The Dalles Watershed area, Camp Baldwin, Warm Springs Reservation, Hwy 216, Hwy 35 and Hwy 26. Trees may not be cut in or within 100 feet of a trail, 200 feet of campgrounds, recreation sites, or within 300 feet of a stream or lake, or any area’s posted “no tree cutting”.

PRECAUTIONS Roads on the Forest are not plowed. Take the appropriate clothing and food for your trip as well as chains and shovel. Do not trust your GPS for finding current FS roads. Maps are available at local Forest Offices. Make sure someone knows where you are. Cell phone coverage is limited on Forest.

For more information please call Hood River (541) 352-6002, or Barlow (541) 467-2291 Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

@sadlerw and @MelissaBraxton is it too late to remove the "Places to try" header and the following paragraph: "Christmas trees cut to thin overcrowded stands can be beneficial. As young stands of trees mature, they are constantly competing for more space. By cutting your Christmas tree from dense groups around the more vigorous trees, the remaining trees will grow faster to make our future forest."

I'll add a task on #93 for it.

Can we remove the "Places to Try" header and use a "Cutting Areas" header instead of both. I think we should use one or the other, but not both.
