It seems like if its using a table, it should leverage the existing table ui component styling: https://nciinc.github.io/fs-fork-uswds-site/components/tables/
@bryanmcfadden please help with crafting some language here regarding the Sulphur Ranger District RE Jodi King information in SME testing. The "When to cut your tree" information for the Sulphur District implies that Elk Creek special cutting area is the only place where you can go to get a tree on the Sulphur District. We need to find a way to describe that the Sulphur Ranger District is open to Christmas tree cutting subject to the rules and guidelines of your permit, and that the Elk Creek special cutting area, within the Sulphur District, is "special" because it has certain dates/times that it is open.
Additionally, the order of information in the When to cut section is represented different from the order in which the district maps are displayed in the Where to cut section. Currently the When to cut section shows Sulphur first, followed by Canyon Lakes; and the Where to cut section shows Canyon Lakes first followed by Sulphur. These sections should follow the same presentation in flow.
@ASprinkle @MelissaBraxton @JaneZC @bryanmcfadden Here is the screenshoot of the updated "When to cut" section:
That is easy to read - I like the clear and simple presentation of the information.
Is it clear in this table that Christmas tree cutting is allowed all season for the across the Sulphur Ranger District? Maybe we can put "all season" under the "Cutting Times" box for Sulphur Ranger District. It's also not entirely clear that Elk Creek is an area within the Sulphur Ranger District.
Can we remove the "Canyon Lakes Ranger District prohibits tree cutting outside of the Red Feather Lakes cutting area" -since it's in the Rules page? or restructure it to say "The Canyon Lakes Ranger District only allows Christmas tree cutting in the Red Feather Lakes cutting area" Can we find a way to make it clear in the table that Red Feather Lakes is within the Canyon Lakes Ranger District?
Add the word Christmas to: "Boulder and Clear Creek Ranger Districts prohibit "Christmas" tree cutting..."
Also, it would be good to reorganize the order of the cutting areas listed in the table, to match the order that they are presented in the Where to cut your tree section: Red Feather Lakes, Sulphur Ranger District, Elk Creek.
Hi @ASprinkle
We debated quite a bit on whether its important information to know that the special cutting areas are part of a particular Ranger District for the purposes of this section only. Unfortunately, where you can cut a tree in ARP is not "equal" ... equal in the sense that all areas are the same. In one instance, you have an entire Ranger District that allows cutting; in another you have a Ranger District that only allows cutting in one area but prohibits it elsewhere. If you try to divide the information by geographic area, it is extremely difficult to make this information clear (as we've discovered).
In the end, we ended up asking ourselves: does the average person need to know right now in this when to cut section that Elk Creek is in Sulphur? The thought was no ... not here. But, they do need to know how to get there when they leave on their trip (ie. directions! maps!). :)
So, the thought was ... that this "when to cut" section should focus on what is promised: "when to cut." ... just listing the dates and times based on the names of where you can cut ... and have the very next section "where to cut" focus more on the where to cut (as the header promises). Reorganizing the maps per your suggestion would definitely help - we discussed that too :) - as would moving the Prohibited information below the maps (so that folks first see the where that corresponds to the information in the table).
And, I am not wedded to this approach but wanted to explain the thinking behind it. We were trying to keep the average Jane Q. Public user in mind ... and I I think it would take more usability testing with the average person to determine if this approach works.
Hope this helps - and happy to discuss.
p.s. Sorry for the long answer ... :)
@JaneZC Thank you for the background thinking on this. It is certainly not easy. I understand the approach of providing what is promised which answers the user question of what they would expect to see in the when to cut (names of places and when they're open). That seems pretty clear and straight forward to me!
Can we add the "all season" language or something to that effect in the blank cutting area dates box for Sulphur?
@ASprinkle @MelissaBraxton @JaneZC Updated screen based on our discussion.
I have sent this mock on to the folks at ARNF, and am waiting on feedback from them. Initially I received a response that preferred this mock up, but had a concern that "Sulphur Ranger District" wasn't very meaningful and that people might need a map, or that it might need to say "Designated areas on Sulphur Ranger District". I think that concern is addressed in the Where to cut your tree section. For now, this mock is great way to address the story. I might have more to add once we hear back from the Forest. Great meeting today!
@ASprinkle @MelissaBraxton I added a task to rearrange the maps, but will wait until dates display feedback.
Looks good to me!
The dates display looks good to me as well. We might be waiting another day to get feedback from the ARNF, hard to say...
Notes
Refer to story #322 mocks that @bryanmcfadden presented.
If we change the appearance for the ARNF do we need to change it for the other Forests?
