Kevin, I assume that, even without a prompt from you, you want me to look at these. If this is not so, just let me know, and I won't do it again.
Here are the words in this list that struck my attention, and that I think there is a case for, with occasional comments. None of them are in en_US, according to your tool.
contrabassoon(s) antivenom - I think the technical term antivenin is considered more correct, but I imagine that non-technical people are likely to use this instead (and it is considered acceptable) dumpsite(s) Pepsis - Plural of Pepsi doglike hottie(s) soundcheck(s) soundbar(s) - clearly a neologism, but pretty common already, I think. I may well add it to my own neologism list. soundalike(s) blackface Bharat - The official name of India, presumably from Hindi. Dunno whether that makes it worth recognizing or not. nitty-gritty - Just how do you handle hyphenated words anyhow?
@biljir Yes your feedback is always useful.
Right now I don't include hyphenated words but I hope to change that. When I do I will plan to only include hyphenated words if at least one part of the word is not normally in the dictionary. "nitty-gritty" will count since nitty is not in the dictionary normally.
Thanks again for your feedback.
All, I have been busy with other things but I plan to create a new release sometime in August.
I am going to put this one off to the next release. When looking a lot of these words up it is very unclear how acceptable the run-together (i.e. with out a space or a hyphen) is. For example when goggling "soundbar" it seams that the more common form is "sound bar".
@kevina:
When I have a doubt I check the Oxford dictionary: http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/american_english/soundbar
But, yes, it is true that some words can be written in more than a way.
Dictionaries differ wildly on these word forms (or wordforms or word-forms :) ). I have seen several dictionaries from reputable and respected publishers that will spell a headword in one of these ways, and then use some other spelling in all their examples!
I haven't found a dictionary yet which is always in tune with (what seems to be) the most common perspective on such words. The Oxford dictionaries, for most words, take the position that only one form is really correct, but I often find their choices to be a little old-fashioned. On the other hand, the Collins Cobuild dictionary loves to list multiple forms for such words, often including forms I have seen nowhere else, but sometimes leaving out forms that most dictionaries accept or even prefer.
@marcoagpinto There is no standard body for the English language and the Oxford is but one dictionary that I do not consider an authorize source for American English.
Hello Kevin,
Here are hundreds of words not recognised in US/CA.
Please notice that I have added many dozens of British cities+persons names.
I was in Wikipedia checking the British cities.
I have entered feature freeze and I won't add more words to en_GB.
Thanks!
Kind regards,
