Reported by kevina on 2008-07-16 17:34 UTC Orig. from https://sourceforge.net/p/wordlist/issues/13/ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2008 18:20:20 +1000 From: John Pascoe <awpascoe at bigpond net au> To: kevina@gnu.org Subject: English contractions.80

In the abovementioned list the word "dog'sbane" occurs.

Definitely not a contraction. Your software perhaps regards all mid-word apostrophes as contraction indicators in which case this type of error could be repeated with other words.

My Shorter Oxford and Chambers dictionaries both list "dogbane" and "dog's bane".

Worldbook Dictionary ( my "American dictionary") lists "dogbane" and "dog's-bane".

No dictionary that I have access to lists the form quoted at the top so I'm not even sure that it is a valid possessive.

Commented by kevina on 2008-11-27 14:06 UTC There are a few other cases, but they are all at the level 80 or higher. I don't even think "dog's-bane" should be a word but it is in one of my source word lists.

By software assumes any words with a "'" in it, and not ending in "'s" is a contraction.

The only way to fix this is to special case exceptions. It may also be the case that some contraction end in "'s". I will look into this someday.
