@biljir what's you take on this list?

biljir commented 6 years ago

I dunno that I have a take. There's an awful lot of names on his list I don't recognize, but I've never been one to follow celebrities. If I was still maintaining my names list, I'd want to do a bunch of research to find out who these people are, and whether it's likely people will be talking about them next year (which of course can be very hard to guess, even once you know why people might ask Google about them). I feel certain that a significant fraction of the list is names that are going to be famous for at most Andy Warhol's proverbial 15 minutes and then be forgotten. But whether that fraction is more like 30% or 70%, I couldn't possibly guess. I think there are better sources for lists of names. Many good sources for political and sports figures - others are harder to gauge. And, of course, Nobel Prize winners are worthy of recognition, but many of them get mentioned only in technical papers and their obituaries. It's a difficult problem.

@biljir thank you. I think I will pass on including any of these.

Ya know, it wold be interesting to compare this list to the list from the year before. I'm guessing that the intersection of the two will be considerably smaller. If that isn't the case, it increases the odds that this is of some value.

I am willing to check the intersection of multiple years. Should the ticket be reopened? Do you want to come up with a rule about how often a name is repeated, or should I propose one?

Here is an option. I use the existing method to gather a list of celebrity names. Then I compare each name over time the a benchmark term (say, "hamburger") and average the scores for each term over the last 10 years. The data comes from a query like this:

Example of a "keeper" (actress has been popular over time) https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=angelina%20jolie,hamburger

Example of not a keeper (more obscure actress, most famous for her role in a 1980s cult film)) https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=jennifer%20connelly,hamburger

@az0 I have noticed that most are them are missing in the British speller.

At first I was confirming them on Wikipedia, but I noticed that there was no need for that.

Now I have been inserting them into the GB speller and it will be available in the next release.

I have credited you for the names.

Thank you!
