What is Enarx.dev? Some people would say it is a desperately needed open source security project. Others might say it is a cutting edge mechanism to address numerous cybersecurity challenges facing us in our modern era.

As a growing open source security initiative, Enarx has proven to be much more. It is the sum of its parts, the people that make up its talented team. Stay tuned as we introduce our team members to the community over the coming months. If you would like to learn more about @Enarx and its development, consider connecting with us.

If you are interested in contributing to the Enarx project, please visit the team at the daily standup, and introduce yourself.

Without further ado, we present to you, Axel Simon. Axel's LinkedIn profile

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Axel Simon. I've been involved in free and open source software communities for the past 12 years or so. I work for Red Hat in the Office of the CTO as part of the Emerging Technologies' Security team, where I help open source projects focused on security, such as Enarx and Keylime.

Why does the Enarx project interest you?

I'm interested in improving the security of systems as a whole. I find that is one of the few areas where improvements tend to benefit everyone, across the board, large organisations, non-profit groups, public or private, and us, the "end-users".

You recently set off on an adventure learning to rock climb. How does that experience parallel your Enarx work in the open source world?

I recently learned how to set up climbing anchors for cliff (and more generally) outdoor sport climbing. When I started the week-end, I had almost no idea of how to do it and clearly no understanding of how to check for mistakes. But over the week-end, I learned about all these things and grew more confident, to the point where the end of the second day, I could climb with my friends, belaying each other secured with equipment we'd set up ourselves.

In a way, participating in Enarx is similar: we will not ask you to climb the cliff on the day you come and say hi! In fact, just dropping by, seeing how things work, and getting to know the project and the people is a good way to start. We want to make sure you are comfortable wearing a harness before climbing anything, much less setting up your own protective equipment. And just like you can help spot a mistake in climbing, if someone forgets something, you can also help review the code, the documentation, or outreach materials and help improve them.

More generally, we take time to welcome newcomers and answer their questions. We offer multiple ways of asking questions, we have issues tagged "good first issue" and adhere to a code of conduct (the Contributor Covenant) to make sure everyone can feel welcome in the project. You won't be on your own; we do everything together.

What encouragement can you provide to folks interested in exploring the Enarx project?

Don't hesitate to come ask questions and discover the different parts of the project. It is quite varied both technically and organisationally, and there's a good chance that there's something you are interested in and can contribute.

We meet nearly every day, and the atmosphere is pretty easy going!
