Increase the output volume of espeak to the max by adding the appropriate command line option.
During the demo at the Marbles museum, the noise in the room was so loud that KEN's voice could not be heard even when standing close. The volume on the external USB powered speaker was turned to max and the volume settable through alsamixer was set to max. I believe there is another parameter to the espeak command which may be able to increase the volume slightly more. This likely won't fix the problem entirely, but it would be good if the software produces the maximum possible volume and the actual volume can then be controlled by a physical control on the amplifier.
