In the new Sol layout, in order to see all that there is to see, I end up zoomed out so far I can't see the planets (that's ok, I can't see my ship either) -- I also can't click on the planets since they're:
inner solar system planets are all bunched up, and the names are not clickable
the others are so spread out I have to zoom out to see them
Also, once I flew way out there ... it was faster to hyper jump out and back in to get to the center, lol
Perhaps the hyperspace jump radius should be increased a little further past the asteroid belt.
Anyway, the point is that maybe the names should be made clickable?
being able to pan around (and not focus on my ship) could be interesting -- i've wanted the camera to follow my escorts around while I just chill -- not sure how that would function, though -- being able to see your ship is pretty essential to move. Could maybe allow for mouse to pan the map but ship movement could re-center? shrug dunno.
Thanks for playing, and particularly for providing feedback on your experience! Personal experience is the most valuable info we can get when developing the game.
nods Sol is an experiment at replicating a real life system within ES. That bunching up of the planets in the central area of the system is, in fact, the way our system looks: Fairly dense in the inner areas, but once you get into the outer system it is huge expanses of empty space. In the future I hope that this will be somewhat mitigated by having some asteroid bases (both visible and hidden, once we have that mechanic), but yeah, there's a lot of space out there.
The fact that it is actually faster to hyperjump out and in again to get from the outer system to the inner system is actually a weird tidbit that I would like to build into the lore as part of the reason the outer system isn't used as much as other systems. It probably got a lot of early infrastructure and stations and whatnot back before hyperdrives, but now that they exist, why spend the time cruising out to the periphery when one can just do a jump and visit a planet in the next system over?
Yes. Having the palnet labels be clickable (especially at higher zooms) is a great idea. I don't know how easy that would be to, but definitely something that I'll add to my mental list of things to implement (that beings said, I have a lot of ideas in my head. If someone else can implement this, it would be very much appreciated)
Camera pan is an idea that has come up in the past, and the camera variation that currently exists might make that more feasible now, but I'm not sure.
Two things I'll point out, as they might not be obvious: There are settings to make your ship in the upper right display both a ghost and arrows to show both the direction your ship is pointed and the direction your ship is moving. I find the "both" setting in the preferences helpful. The second is that around your RADAR there is an indicator for which direction the center of the system is. It's subtle, but it's there. We'd like to have some better navigational aides, though.
