Enhancement: Record track as an exportable path #65

I frequently want to record the route I've taken while I'm geocaching, but
I can't run geobeagle and my personal favourite app - cardio trainer - at
the same time. I don't know if this is where both apps want to access the
GPS at the same time, or what, but Cardio Trainer will tend to bail after
about 1 minute - not very good!

Realistically, I only really want to record the route I've taken for
bragging rights - "I walked for nearly 3 hours and over x miles to get all
that location!", but to do that, I need to be able to log my route.

Is there any way you can write the route to a GPX file? Even if it's turned
off by default, I think it would be really useful!

Thanks,

Jon "The Nice Guy"

Have you tried MyTracks? I believe that works fine with GeoBeagle.

The idea would be fun but dedicated applications will have more features and
work
better in this area. Stephen agreed to close this issue.

Hi! I think geobeagle is an awesome application. I use it frequently and I have
not
found anything that to dislike about it.

I have recorded tracks with MyTracks while using Geobeagle at the same time and
I can
report that this also works exceptionally well.

However! I still believe there would be a big advantage to adding logging
capabilities to geobeagle.
The way I usually geocache is that I have the phone in my pocket in stand-by
mode and
only occasionally take it out to check distance and direction of my target. This
allows me to save lots of battery power because the GPS is mostly switched off.

If I use MyTracks to record my track the battery is drained very fast because
the GPS
is always on- even with the phone in power saving mode.

Now if geobeagle were to handle the track logging and would only log my
position when
I actually have the phone switched on, then of course the track would not be as
exact
as with mytracks, but the phone would use a lot less power. I think the recorded
track would still be very useful because I mostly check the phone at
intersections or
other places at which I need to change direction.

So while I agree that dedicated apps have more features and are more exact, I
think
adding logging capabilities would still be a feature that many users would
appreciate
because of the optimal power saving compared to MyTracks recording.

I hope I haven't committed a faux pas by posting to a closed thread.

I have tried GPSLogger (it only logs at intervals) but it does not work well
with
geobeagle.

For me the ideal solution would be that geobeagle has a toggle switch to enable
logging and then simply logs to a gpx file at set intervals while switched on.

Thanks for reading my lengthy post ;),

Phillip

I suppose you also want to see the tracks in GeoBeagle? Or is a GPX file enough?

Logging to a GPX would be perfect because I could just drag and drop that into
google
earth. I really don't care about seeing the track on my phone.

I'm reopening the issue. Stephen can choose if he wants to keep it open.
Personally, I prioritize other features to work on.
