Here's my suggested text:

Please describe the visualization that you have saved, including what data are represented in the visualization and what trends or patterns the visualization appears to reveal.

Please describe the contents of this data set, including any relevant details about how, when, and where the data were collected, or (in the case of existing data sets) where the data were found.

Please describe yourself for other members of the iSENSE community. This information will be displayed only to users who are logged in to the iSENSE web site and who click on your profile page.

My primary issue with these is they are not templates so much as instructions.

True. Would the alternative - a description of a random viz, data set, and person - be weird, though?

For example:

This scatter plot shows the relationship between water temperature and dissolved oxygen in the Charles River over a two-year period. In general, higher temperatures are correlated with lower dissolved oxygen levels.

This data set includes temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, salinity, and turbidity data from a sampling station by the Museum of Science in the Charles River's lower basin.

Hi. I'm Michael! I teach seventh-grade earth science at the Kathryn P. Stoklosa Middle School in Lowell, Massachusetts. I love rivers, and I love data!

Also, I forget - will these show up only to a user while he or she is editing one of these fields, or will they be displayed to everyone in template form until edited? (Seems relevant somehow.)

They will only show to the editor until the editor hits 'save'.

Your second set is more like examples than a template, though templates often contain examples so its reasonably close. Here's an example of the style I'm thinking in terms of a viz:

Relationships Talk about the relationships shown on the graph here - expanding on what the fields involved are in detail. For example: The Y axis shows the pH values of water gathered from the Merrimack River at the UML boathouse. The X axis shows the date these samples were taken.

Conclusions Talk about conclusions you have drawn from the visualization here. For example: There is a clear relationship between the season and pH value measured - pH levels seem to increase during the Fall months and decrease over the rest of the year.

Right. OK. Then following your template template, we end up with sort of a hybrid of instructions and examples in each category, along these lines...

Projects

OVERVIEW Please describe your project in detail, so that other users can find it. If applicable, please specify what academic subject(s) the project relates to and which grade level(s) it is appropriate for. (E.g., In this project, students will collect water quality data from the Charles River. This is an earth science and biology project suitable for students in middle school and high school.)

PROCEDURE If the project involves users collecting or visualizing data, please provide step-by-step instructions for these activities. (E.g., 1. Collect a sample of water. 2. Perform temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen measurements on the sample. 3. Upload the data to iSENSE. 4. Make a scatter chart to look for relationships between different values.)

SOURCE If the project contains an existing data set, please specify the source of the data, including a web link or bibliographical reference. (E.g., http://www.crwa.org/water_quality.html)

Visualizations
