"Everything about the homepage doesn't tell you what iSENSE does." - @jdalphon

"Both the mobile and desktop homepages are useless" - @NatTuck

Has it been discussed as to what the new homepage should look like? If not, I move to add this to the next iSENSE developer meeting.

I'm reading Steve Krug's Don't Make Me Think, and I just reached the chapter on designing Home pages. Here's a short passage I found that could help guide a discussion on re-design:

"As quickly and clearly as possible, the Home page needs to answer the four questions I have in my head when I enter a new site for the first time:

  1. What is this?
  2. What do they have here?
  3. What can I do here?
  4. Why should I be here - and not somewhere else?"

I feel our current Home page strongly answers question 2, but doesn't really address question 1. If this is something that continues into the Fall, I'd love to be involved.

As I understand it, there's a prototype "carousel" design in the works. What's the status on that? On Jul 10, 2014 7:07 PM, "kcarcia" notifications@github.com wrote:

@JKinsman let me know when you have finished this so I can review it.

kcarcia commented 10 years ago

We need to find images for this. #1744

JKinsman commented 10 years ago

Hey all! Just a quick update in terms of the assets that are still needed for the new home page. As it stands now, I currently need three pictures (or drawings), one for each slide of the home page carousel.

  1. Collect. This needs to capture the theme of collecting scientific data, preferably in a classroom setting. Ideally, this should in some way involve either students collecting data together, or performing the same experiment independently.
  2. Share. This needs to capture the students (somehow) sharing their data with one another. I could imagine a picture where two students are comparing their data with one another, or perhaps using an electronic device to view another student's data.
  3. Visualize. This needs to involved an entire classroom viewing something that resembles an iSENSE visualization. Perhaps this could even be a real iSENSE vis drawn into the image?

The three images we are currently using (which we don't have rights to), are attached below. This should give our potential illustrator(s) an idea of what we are looking for.

Update: Homepage has been code reviewed. We are waiting on images to move forward. @fgmart any updates with the images for the homepage?

Testers: Test the homepage and make sure it looks good on all screen sizes.

asalani93 commented 9 years ago

PASSED testing on Chrome 45.0.2454.101 (linux). suggestion: 2 boxes per row for featured and curated projects on small screen size, or 6 items total also, but the app buttons on the same row, and add some space between them

pat-son commented 9 years ago

PASSED testing on Chrome 46.0.2490.80 (Mac OSX 10.10.5). Looks good. Maybe add a paragraph somewhere explaining what iSENSE is?

tylerpuleo commented 9 years ago

PASSED That's fine

JasonD94 commented 9 years ago

PASSED testing on Chrome 46.0.2490.80 (linux). Looks pretty good. The images stretch a lot in between small / medium sizing though. I would also agree that medium size should be 2 rows instead of 3, looks weird with only 4 featured projects / curated projects. 6 featured projects could also work, since 3 by 2 would look pretty good in the medium size.
