Backup Original Firmware 2.6.2-Jul 6 2010

I would Like to backup this firmware on my NS-K330 before trying SnakeOS since 
this version seems stable and great, but I would like to test Snake. Any Ideas 
on how to backup my firmware or anyone know where to find it ?

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
2.6.2-Jul 6 2010 on XP

Please provide any additional information below.

This part is off Topic but I read the temps on cpu at 135 deg F and 102 def F 
on the ram. Is this a concern ? I added some chipset heatsinks.

Thanks Ted. I was looking for version 2.6.2 tho, version 2.5.0 is pretty old. 
Mine came with version 2.6.2 and I wanna test snake but not wanna lose my new 
OS.

@clavo: I used a IR Temperature pen/gun. 

Is there gonna be more updates to this project? I would like to help out 
somehow if there will be.

Hi all. 

I just purchased a NAS (1xEthernet 2xUSB) device off eBay (picture attached) 
for around A$40. It was shipped from Hong Kong.  The manual says it's a "652 
USB Network Server" that is compliant with DLNA and UPnP specifications. No CD 
came with the product. The sticker on the device says "LAN STORAGE". The 
underside says "Model 652". See eBay shop http://stores.ebay.com.au/nikingstore

It has a WebGUI interface (copyright 2006-2008). No where in the GUI or in the 
manual or on the device does the manufacturer show. The little booklet that 
came with the device is dual language (English and Chinese) but the writing is 
very very small, very poor grammar, and very very small black and white 
screenshots of what looks like Windows XP. Even when using a magnifying glass 
the pictures are very hard to make out! Yes, I realise the device is cheap (and 
therefore the axiom "pay peanuts get a monkey" might well apply to this 
device). It's my first foray into NAS type devices.

In the GUI, Tools -> Update shows my firmware as Version 2.6.2-Jul 6 2010. I'd 
like to be able to back this up. I've no idea of the chipset and therefore 
cannot confirm if it's using SnakeOS.

The device works (for the most part), and has some good features (except 
printer support is terrible). 

Main problem: I have 2 external USB hard disk drives attached (1 x NTFS 1TB; 1 
x FAT32 320GB). I can see both on my home network, and I can access the files 
on them ok (after some fddling around). I'm running Windows 7 BTW. However, 
every time the NAS reboots (ie. power failure in my house or by accident or by 
necessity as the device tends to 'freeze' from time to time), the mounted drive 
letters change, thereby affecting any mapped drives I've set up on my OS. I'd 
like to be able to ensure the drives mounted and mapped remain the same every 
time (eg. C and D, but sometimes they show D and E, and other times I get 
'ghost' drive letters).

Anyone else have any experience with this device?

I couldn't find a way to backup my existing 2.6 firmware, so I bit the bullet 
and installed the snakeos-V1.3.2-20101130-from-original.bin firmware. It said 
it installed and to wait 20 seconds for a reboot. The reboot never happened. So 
I pulled the power plug, waited 10 secs, then reinserted power plug. Refreshed 
my browser (http://nas/) and got "connection timed out" in my browser (FF4). So 
I did a factory reset and refreshed browser. Still no joy. Looks like I've 
bricked the unit. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can try next please?

Ok, finally worked it out. Here are my comments as it may help others in future.

1) The device wasn't bricked at all. I just couldn't reach it via the previous 
WebGUI interface on http://nas as I could before the Snake OS firmware upgrade.

2) The device is now reached via http://snake (username=admin password=snake). 
See attached screenshot.

3) It also shows up as SNAKE in my Windows 7 explorer network folder (before it 
would show as NAS).

I'll report more when it comes to hand.

Fun fun fun.... I just got one of these things yesterday, and, flashed SnakeOS 
into it. It all seemed to go 'as expected', however then I couldn't see it. 
Going by Mark's result, I doubted it was bricked -- and this is in fact the 
case, it isn't bricked, but the screenshot above is misleading, and could make 
folks think such is so...

I grabbed the snake-sdk and had a peek, and this is what takes place...

*IF* you have a dhcpd running on your network (most xDSL routers have one & 
Windows users typically rely on this for netconfig), then the 652 will obtain 
it's ip_addr using that method (as explained in the 'chinenglish' manual ;) In 
your screenshot above, this is what has happened and where the 652 got it's 
192.168.1.14/24 ip_addr.

If you do *NOT* have a dhcpd running on your network, then the 652 will 
fallback to it's default ip_addr as echoed in the same dinky manual -- 
192.168.0.240/24

I can confirm the issues you reported, namely, the connected USB devices/drives 
can enumerate in any which-way order upon reboot/power interruptions, which of 
course can totally invalidate the NAS device's configuration - less than 
handy...and exactly why I headed straight for better firmware.

For those wondering how to back-up the original firmware, I really doubt it's 
worth it ; as Mark, others and myself have found, the shipped firmware is 
anything but useful in practice... apart from the drives issue, printer support 
is a tad fufu..

Não consigo usar no windows 7.  Quando entro no ambiente rede e vou até o 
computador fica pedindo a senha e digito certo, mas mesmo assim não entra na 
rede "SNAKE". Tinha testado com o windows XP e deu certo. Mesmo com a versão 
anterior fica assim.

computer is asking for the password and typed right, but still does not enter 
the network "SNAKE". Was tested with Windows XP and it worked. Even with the

I finally cracked open the box on my 3rd NS-K330 to find it was FW 2.6.2.  I 
was adding a serial port to a bricked Linksys E2000 router and wanted to test 
my CA-50 cable and refresh my soldering skills on something cheaper.  So, I 
added a serial port to my new NS-K330 and backed up what I could.

I used the instructions for recovery from the googles group here but swapped my 
in and out:

 /bin/dd if=/dev/mtdblock1 of=/usb/sda1/fw_def_mtd1_config.bin
 /bin/dd if=/dev/mtdblock2 of=/usb/sda1/fw_def_mtd2_kernel.bin
 /bin/dd if=/dev/mtdblock3 of=/usb/sda1/fw_def_mtd3_initrd-and-web.bin

For good measure I also did block 0, 4, and 5.  The filesizes are all 
different.  My question is: which one of these is the actual firmware?  If a 
linux guru can tell me that, I will upload the correct file.  I may even test 
it while the serial rig is hooked up.  I would have thought it was kernel.bin 
but that file is only ~960KB.  The web file is bigger at ~2600KB.  Do I have to 
group several of them together to make a firmware file that is flashable in 
snake?  Is it the init-rd-and-web file only it is smaller than Snake version?

Let me know what the next step is - soon, preferably, I want my kitchen table 
back ;-)

hope someone helps you finish, cuz I still want that firmware version. Because 
I just bit the bullet and installed snakeOS without trying the original 
manufacturer 2.6.2 fw.

I have the same device as Mark, with a different original firmware version but 
visually identical.

After reading the comments, I decided to try the Snake OS, but I don't seem to 
be able to upload the firmware. I'm using the "original" one, for the devices 
not currently running Snake, which I assume is correct.

At first I thought the path was too long or there were too many folders in the 
way, so I moved and renamed the file to my desktop. I was at least able to 
navigate to it and select upload. The GUI flashes a moment then returns to 
normal. 

It doesn't seem to do anything, even after a restart. Am I doing something 
wrong?

....and now it doesn't come up on the network at all, which may be in keeping 
with what I've read about the original firmware versions.

I did find what seems to be a semi-official webpage for them, which has some 
Snake OS builds on it, if I can get it to come back up, I'll try one of those.

Wow...after half an hour of messing around, I finally get back into the device 
- hit the reset button etc. Still showing original firmware, the other one I 
found on the related page didn't appear to upload. Selected, clicked upload, 
quick blink, same as before. 

At least it's back up.
