In a meeting today, we agreed to the following rules for Epics:

The Epic tag should be ignored. If an Epic is a feature or improvement, it must be tagged as such. Otherwise it is only a collection of issues.
Subtasks of Epics, that are Bugs should also be ignored, but Improvements should be listed.
