This PR includes general small improvements to the documentation, docstings and examples to improve the generated documentation for the website.

This is almost ready to go. It needs:

[x] #1234 to be merged
[x] update the image in the readme to point to a github URL so it will display in PyPI
[x] bump the version number to 8.0.0 proper
