gnudb.gnudb.org is now asking for unique email address #547

Describe the bug Please note, this may not be a bug or something you can change on fre:ac...When inserting a CD into the drive, I was confronted with a warning message from gnudb.gnudb.org. Instead of collecting the album information, the artist name showed as "fre:ac 1.1.7. not supported", the title was set to "You are using fre:ac version 1.1.7, we advise downgrading it. Please see https://gnudb.org for more information." This is a new development as I was using the application without issue last night (Mountain region, USA).

The GNU DB website (https://gnudb.org/howto.php) advises to use a unique email address. I had been using the default - cddb@freac.org.

Update I also tried changing the email address to something unique, a personal email, and it did not change the behavior/message from GNU DB, so it does seem like it's more of a bug than a problem with unique users.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Insert CD
  2. Observe message

Expected behavior I expect that GNUDB would be consulted for the album info without issue.

Screenshots Please see attached screenshot.

System (please complete the following information)

Additional context I'd prefer not to use a unique email, but will if needed. This is a great application, thank you for all your hard work!!! ![Uploading image.png…]()

New Note

gibats commented 11 months ago

This is happening to me too. Started today. I'm in Brazil

gibats commented 11 months ago

I've found the reason!!!! At gnudb.org site, at the bottom of page, below "Copyright Violation Notice" link, there's a notice: "Important notice: If you are using fre:ac version 1.1.3, we recommend updating it. Conversely, if you are using fre:ac version 1.1.7, we advise downgrading it. Both of these versions have a known bug that can lead to incorrect discid and/or track offset values. This can result in the rejection of your new entry submissions to GnuDB by the server."

This is caused, according to them, by a bug in fre:ac v1.1.7

Is anyone aware of what the bugs are, or do we have any indication that someone is actively working on it?

gibats commented 11 months ago

From what I read in the explanation, it's something related to recording in CDDB

Here's the latest update from the GNUDB site...

Important notice:

We have ceased support for fre:ac version 1.1.7 and strongly recommend downgrading to a previous version or using an alternative program.

This decision stems from critical bugs within fre:ac that lead to inaccurate discid and track offset values. Consequently, submissions containing these errors are rejected by the server, causing users to believe that GnuDB is malfunctioning when their submissions don't appear.

Despite our attempts to contact the fre:ac developer, we have not received a response. Given these circumstances, this is the best course of action we can take to maintain the health of GnuDB. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Sincerely, Your GnuDB Team

Update: October 23, 2023 The fre:ac developer has returned and is working on a solution. However, in the meantime, we recommend downgrading to version 1.1.6.

So it does seem like it is being addressed by the developer and we can use v1.1.6 until it gets resolved.

Where can I download v1.1.6 for ubuntu? Couldn't find a download yet.

It would probably be easiest to use the appimage release. I gave up on trying to downgrade the flatpak.
