I think I had this committed locally since 2018, but couldn't get around to finishing it for some reason or another.
There are actually a few more things that become unused with Python 3, such as legacy pynotify support or the python-mpd compatibility shims.
The shebang already points to python3 so it doesn't make sense to have these compat shims in anyway.
