PR from the staging branch to develop, all changes have already been reviewed. Thanks @eeberhard for the improvements, I think they are really good and important.

Preferably, as happened in another staged PR, you can squash the 5.2.2 version fix into 4ea8408. Then this PR can be fast-forwarded without squashing.
