Apply ess changes #15

These are to pull in a few changes from ESS to the community module.

@tboegi - I'm not sure I follow. The file Makefile.EEE was removed in commit 532cae4, but there was still a reference to it, which I removed. Are you saying they should be in the same commit?

Or are you just saying that I should include that file into the main makefile and be done with it?
