mlflow logging of experiments #10

this has logging of experiments and some associated cleanup

a big TODO leftover is logging the config dictionary. There's a line that is commented out in run.py that will do the job, but we just need to clean up the config dictionary a bit first (flatten it, make sure it contains friendly types that can be logged, etc)
