We need to get this done very soon, and get materials - the tech review is on friday, and without these parts, we have very little to show. I have no access to either of these machines, nor experience exporting parts to cut from solidworks.

@reaganm : Have you found the material you want the sifter to be made of? Do you know where to get it? Is it worth laser-cutting, or will a bandsaw suffice?

@premphy : do you have a final arm design yet to evaluate the amount of material needed for?

cssubedi commented 8 years ago

Hey Guys,

I am almost done with the arm. I will commit it as soon as I am done. The aluminium sheet for the arm has arrived and is in the lab. So, I guess whoever has access to waterjets can pick up the sheet from lab and fabricate the part today. For the arm, we will also be needing a bending machine. I do not have access to any machine shop.

Thanks.

Today I acquired some free 1/4" acrylic sheets and will be able to laser cut the sifter later tonight after updating the CAD. Should I be cutting anything else other than the sifter?

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

Nicely done!

Will you be able to cut the arm too? Ideally, we'd get all the pulley mounts on the sheet metal as well. What should I be doing in solidworks to lay these out on a sheet that you can then lasercut?

The size of the laser cutter I have access to is 12" x 16", so if you can fit the arm parts on sheets of that size then yes. I may be able to access the larger laser cutter in csail, but its not a guarantee I'd be able to do that tonight. On a side note, I was able to find some 1/2" acrylic as well, but its not as easily accessible to me tonight, if that is useful for us at all. We should be able to cut the sheet in half, and put some of the arm on one half, and the rest + pulley mounts on the other

reaganm commented 8 years ago

Cool, if you can lay everything out in N 12"x16" dxf files where N < 3 and send them to me before midnight I can cut them. Try conserve things to 10"x16" wherever possible because some of the acrylic sheets were cut poorly. On Nov 12, 2015 6:55 PM, "Eric Wieser" notifications@github.com wrote:

@14kirchm and I are working on laying those out now

cssubedi commented 8 years ago

Do you also have access to waterjet? We will also have to fabricate arm on 1/8 inch aluminium sheet.

mkirchmeyer commented 8 years ago

No we don't but the plan is to have Maggie laser cut the pieces. We are laying the parts in dxf

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

@premphy, to confirm, you do not need to lay out the arm - we're working on that.

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

Final call on #16? Do we change the rail motor mounts to hold the MX64s?

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

@reaganm, do you have the ability to cut the sheet we have into pieces? Is the sheet still in the lab, @premphy?

cssubedi commented 8 years ago

sheet is in the lab, I don't have access to machine shop. So, I can't cut them.

I have access to a bandsaw here, but I'm a bit nervous I've got the wrong blade on it

reaganm commented 8 years ago

I don't have access to a bandsaw/waterjet after business hours unfortunately. If we need more acrylic than 3 sheets of 12x16 for the arm I can get more tomorrow. On Nov 12, 2015 8:36 PM, "Eric Wieser" notifications@github.com wrote:

All this acrylic is 1/4 in, right? Sadly the M5 bolts I bought for the pulley mounts assume 1/8in...

And unless you have a good way to fold acrylic, the arm is going to need to be metal.

@reaganm, Can you confirm if the laser cutter is able to cut aluminum?

reaganm commented 8 years ago

Laser cutter does not cut aluminum. I can grab appropriate sized bolts tomorrow morning from csail. On Nov 12, 2015 9:24 PM, "Eric Wieser" notifications@github.com wrote:

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

In that case, we may as well cut the brackets out of acrylic tonight, and hope we can find the bolts later. I can send you a DXF in the next 15 minutes

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

@reaganm It's in the repository here

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

Just realized that dxf doesn't account for the "kerf" of the laser. Oops. Not sure how I'm supposed to add that anyway though...

cssubedi commented 8 years ago

I think when you laser cut, you can specify the cutting kerf offset...Not sure though

reaganm commented 8 years ago

I was going to go to lab at 11 tomorrow and get the sheet so I can hopefully waterjet before 2. Is there a final layout that will fit on the sheet we have?

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

@premphy, where are we with the arm?

simpri21 commented 8 years ago

Does anyone know where the sheet metal is? I can water jet the arm parts right now On Nov 29, 2015 5:21 PM, "Eric Wieser" notifications@github.com wrote:

It's on the upper part of the desk in the lab.

The cad is not suitable for cutting right now (#53)

According to @premphy

I acquired some aluminum sheet from friend that can be bent. We will use those to make servo mounts. I will drop them onto our box today during lab.

So maybe those could be cut. I'm not sure if we have a lasercutter file for that though

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

the full list of unresolved arm problems

reaganm commented 8 years ago

@simpri21 are you going to be able to waterjet the arm parts today? @premphy says all the cad is done and in the Hand_new folder. I can lay out all the parts in .dxf if that makes it easier. If you can't then we should start making other plans now.

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

I've just corrected the \hardware\Parts\Hand\Hand_new\Sheet3_mounts.SLDDRW file to show the parts unfolded

eric-wieser commented 8 years ago

@premphy, can you confirm that \hardware\Parts\Sheet3_mounts.SLDDRW is the outdated version? (and if so, delete it, to prevent accidentally cutting it`

In general, it's a bad idea to leave anything old lying around

cssubedi commented 8 years ago

I could not find anything like that in \hardware\Parts\ directory..everything associated with arm is under \hardware\parts\hand\hand_new directory. I guess someone already deleted it.

cssubedi commented 8 years ago

I have taken vs-11 servo to test the position control from Arduino. Will be back at 4pm.
