automatic completion with ELn #3

an option should be settable to permit eln to work w/o arguments, simply 
generating files in the 
user's scratch directory.

additionally, file names w/o .xml extensions should be automatically completed.

ELn command can be used without a file name.

automatic addition of .xml extension is not yet implemented
