There is not enough space in the "status" area of the UI to support a 15 pixel (5bars*3pixels per increment) 5 bar WiFi status icon. Possible solutions are to go to 2 pixels per increment or implement a new UI.
A new design might be needed because if you see a 1 bar display, it might not be obvious that the 1 bar is a WiFi signal strength indicator?
