I don't plan to add Gmail support to Precipitate; setting up Mail.app or another
local email client to sync your Gmail through IMAP will already accomplish that.

That is too bad, because some of us do not want Mail.app running as it is a bit
of a resource hog. I'll admit it has
gotten a lot better lately, but so much of my information is in the cloud I
prefer it to stay there.

If I wrote an email client from scratch it might well be a resource hog too.
There's
no reason to believe that I, as a single person with no experience writing email
clients and very little time to spend on it, would do better than a dedicated
team of
experienced engineers.

we can just pass on the search term to gmail and return the results.
