How Will I Recognize (and use) the "Next Release" On the Download list? #639

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
A webm bug I reported has been fixed and the forum page is now closed:

https://code.google.com/p/webm/issues/detail?id=541&thanks=541&ts=1359430501

"#20 matthewj...@google.com" says "We'll fold this change into the next
release."

But (for non-techies) he doesn't say:

1) When that will be?

2) What the file name will be?

3) Where it will be? (On the Download page?)

4) How the webm update will work? (Is downloading it all I do? Does it
automatically find & update Windows Media Player? Do I manually have to do
anything to get WMP to play webm files without dropping sound?)

Can someone please answer these questions?

This change was incorporated into the 2013/10/26 release (v1.02). Let us know
whether this solves the problem.

I'm NOT a code-writing engineer! Please copy and paste these questions -- with
answers! -- in your reply:

1) You have TWO 10-26-13 releases! Installer (1 MB) and Source (18 MB). Which
was I supposed to use? Installer alone? Source? Both?

2) I downloaded Installer, then clicked install_webmdshow.exe, which put its
new folder here: c:\program files\common files\WebM Project\webmdshow, next to
the previous folder c:\program files\common files\WebM Project\webmmf. But
there's a utility that didn't install: playwebm.exe, which the ReadMe says "is
for basic testing and playback of WebM files." And another, makewebm.exe, which
the ReadMe says "is for simple creation of WebM files."

My original problem was: when webm files play in Windows Media Player, audio
ends several seconds before picture does.

Do I need either utility to fix that problem? Or was webmdshow.exe enough to
fix it?

3) If I need the utilities, which? Both? If I do, where should it/they go? In
which folder?

4) How does Windows Media Player interact with this new install? Do I need to
do something to Windows Media Player? What, SPECIFICALLY?? Or does Windows
Media Player automatically play webm files correctly now that I've installed
webmdshow.exe?

Please answer all questions!

D'oh! I misunderstood the problem. You're asking about the Media Foundation
components.

The bug to which you are referring was fixed as of the 1.0.1 release of the
Media Foundation components, which were released on 2013/10/03. Those
components update automatically, so there's nothing you should have to do here,
once you have installed them originally.

Check the version information listed under Programs in the Control Panel.
Verify that you have 1.0.1.

If you have the latest version, and the audio drop-out problem isn't fixed,
then go ahead and re-open the bug.

Here are your question and my answers:

(Q)

1) You have TWO 10-26-13 releases! Installer (1 MB) and Source (18 MB). Which
was I supposed to use? Installer alone? Source? Both?

(A)

You want to download and install the components from here:

http://www.webmproject.org/ie/
https://tools.google.com/dlpage/webmmf/

(Q)

Or was webmdshow.exe enough to
fix it?

(A)

You need to install the Media Foundation components using the link above.

(Q)

3) If I need the utilities, which? Both? If I do, where should it/they go? In
which folder?

(A)

Install the Media Foundation components.

(Q)

4) How does Windows Media Player interact with this new install? Do I need to
do something to Windows Media Player? What, SPECIFICALLY?? Or does Windows
Media Player automatically play webm files correctly now that I've installed
webmdshow.exe?

(A)

Install the Media Foundation components. *.webm files should then be
associated with WMP.

Hi,

Didn't realize Media Foundation components update automatically. Checked in
Control Panel and I do indeed have the latest version: 1.0.1.

Ran a few webm files in Windows Media Player and the early track cut-off bug
seems to be gone. Thanks for the update. Seems to have fixed the bug!
