I know what you mean about favorite class! That's why I think Ranger and
Magic-Eater are too strong.
I'm opposed to the "corporeal" effect of light for "Wraithform." Death as a
school already is underappreciated, because Vampirism True doesn't work against
undead monsters or monsters that reflect and because Hellfire has terrible fail
rates and high cost. Nerfing the one saving grace of the school means we won't
be seeing any Death Paladins.
I'm OK with it for Spectres though. Although honestly, I'd just stay in the
wall and taking crushing damage every so often rather than leave the wall and
get hit for full damage. So I'm not sure it will have its intended effect.

Oh, I know! We can make Spectre a "personality" and make it like Munchkin..
you can win with it, but we won't respect you for it :)
So Spectre personality would give all the features (passwall, RPois, FA,
SeeInvis, RNether, etc), but none of the drawbacks, and would be another "easy
mode" type character.

I do plan to address Death a bit later on. The Wraithform and Light effect is
already in there ... I didn't do it :) I just wanted to justify the change to
the Spectre.
My plans for death are:
[1] Make Deathray actually useful ... but not too useful. Currently, it only
works 1% of the time against monsters over about level 20 or so. Interesting,
it does work 1 in 888 against uniques ... I never knew that!
[2] Perhaps make Genocide and Mass Genocide power 110 rather than 100. It
annoys me that this class still wants ?Genocide and ?MassGenocide which are
power 150.
[3] I can remove the Wraithform light vulnerability if needed ... I never
really found it too big of a drawback.
Hellfire is a really powerful spell, but only the HM can truly wield it well.
Perhaps Wizardy should be more common. Perhaps Indra and Thranduil could have
it. Wizard Cloaks have it as well. So, getting an extra 2% bonus would be
nice, but only if wizardry actually stacks. (?)

About staying in the wall and taking crushing damage, I think I will bump up
the damage taken. Maybe 20% of your hp (50 min) or something similar.
Passwall in general needs a slight nerf. I think monsters will rate it higher
when contemplating Dispel Magic as well.
Were you serious about the personality suggesion or was that a joke? I can do
that, but I'd rather we balance this race out a bit instead.

It was a joke ;-) I figure you'd be too sad to lose your favorite race.
"Spectre" is hardly a personality anyway..

I thought so :) I would be deeply saddened indeed to see my favorite race go!
But, having ready access to code, I could always add back:
The Spectral Amulet [+50] (+25, +25) (+5)
+ 5 to all stats.
Free Action, See Invisible. Immunity to Poison and Nether.
Grants unlimited Wraithform if worn, including Reflection and 50%
Invulnerability

Then we might as well rename Chengband to Jokeband ;-)

Fixed for 0.0.20.
No FA. No Telepathy. -2 Con. HD stay at 7. +2 Wis. Increased passwall
damage.
Not exactly what I initially suggested, but I think taking more passwall damage
(and proportional passwall damage rather than fixed) is a better biff then
light corporeality (which I may add later anyway). The latter would be pretty
uncommon, whereas the extra damage will be a constant limitation.
