This reverts commit 54d333cba66d9a7c58cacaa27b49547c6137b55c, reversing changes made to 4382073940a1a469480860350579c2f7b1646f19.

Can we revert this "Revert"? I think the way to go forward is to pull in #391

i'm ok with going with #391 … but we need to do one or the other.
