I don't think the test failure is related to this change

No, that was extremely unlikely. When re-running the tests they were fine (as expected). The problem is that the iOS build is flaky on GitHub. I think it has to do with access to the simulator. For now I've taken out the iOS build from the GH Actions pipeline, but that's tangential to this PR.
