Just an idea: To verify that the hardware is not broken you could boot up the laptop with a USB stick containing some Linux distribution in live mode. If you hear sound there, you at least know that the hardware is still working.
I installed Ubuntu on dual boot with Windows to see if everything worked fine before I move over. Sound works fine on Windows, in fact, it worked fine on Ubuntu too when it was freshly installed. A few hours later it stopped working. I guess I can try again with a live USB to see what drivers it picks, but I wouldn't know how to install them. Let me try this, thanks
Copying my question from my AskUbuntu post as I haven't yet gotten any responses despite posting a bounty.
I just decided to move to Linux, everything works awesome, loving it. Just sound stopped working and have been trying to diagnose since 8 hours. Here's what I know / tried / done:
Output device shows Dummy Output (when Ubuntu had installed, it showed Intel Tiger Lake - I'm using HP Elitebook 850 G5)
I'm using Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (jammy)
Here is the hw-probe for my system: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=b01a9ac97f I've a feeling the probe says what needs to be done, but I don't have enough experience to know how to do it.
I tried installing from: https://www.realtek.com/en/component/zoo/category/pc-audio-codecs-high-definition-audio-codecs-software Installation / Build process goes fine until I hit
lspci -v
sayslshw -C multimedia
saysPlease let me know if you need anything else, and thank you!
