Rewrite the whole UI system from scratch with an events system so it'll be
easier to use and to maintain.

How about replacing clickable +/- arrow buttons with click+scroll?

That is, to adjust f.ex. a synth parameter, click&hold on a value and drag the 
mouse up or down. This would save space on the UI as some of the buttons could 
be discarded.

Ctrl or shift modifier for precise adjustments would be ace with this method of 
adjusting.
