Screen cut off top and bottom on NTSC LCD TV #4

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Launch SDL-Mame Wii on a NTSC Wii (USA)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I expect to see the full screen. Instead the Top/Bottom are cut.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
The version provided with the pacman bug fix (0.5+ I guess)

Please provide any additional information below.
I haven't played with the safe area setting since it says that it's only on
older TV. I've got a pretty new LCD tv. I'm wondering if it is somehow
compiled for PAL TV which have a higher vertical resolution instead of
figuring out which is the TV resolution at runtime?

Great port other wise! Thanks!

I played a few more games and it doesn't seem to be on all of them. Galaga and
gng
cut both top and bottom. If I set galaga in cocktail mode it displays the full
screen
fine.
sharrier on the other hand displays the full screen just fine. I hope this helps
figure it out.

Is you Wii set to use widescreen? I haven't fully tested widescreen support yet
so
that might be causing the problem.

yes widescreen using the component cable.

Try setting your Wii to standard definition and see if the screen is still cut
off.

I did set it to 4:3 and it still cut off in sdl-mame. The Wii system menu
looked huge
but I wonder if HBC somehow detect the component cable and sets itself to
widescreen?
Because I didn't notice a difference whatsoever in HBC or SDL-Mame.

You wouldn't happen to have some composite/s-video cables to test this on, do
you? If
so, please try those, with and without widescreen.

I'll attempt a trip to the basement to locate the composite cable.

Amazingly the box was accessible and the cable still in it.
So I tried with the composite cable 4:3 TV resolution 480i instead of
Widescreen 480p
and it still show the bottom of the screen in Galaga cut off. It shows only the
first
row of pixels of the "Credits 0" line.

Are you testing on a PAL TV? I'm on NTSC which has a slightly lower vertical
resolution.

All my testing was done on a NTSC television.

Two more things: Does changing the safearea configuration value fix this? (Like
setting it to 0.9 or 0.85) And is the Menu having this problem? (You can test
it by
going to the control configuration menu, which takes up pretty much the entire
screen.)

well I tried to set 0.9 but now all I get when I start sdl-mame is a black
screen. I
put it back to 1.0 but I'm still getting a black screen. If I delete mame.ini
will it
recreate one with the default settings?

Grab the one from the .zip file and use that one.

What OS are you on/what text editor did you use the change it? (If you're on
Windows,
try editing it using Notepad++)

I used PSPad under Windows, but first I edited it with WiiXplorer. Newly
unzipped one
works again. safearea of 0.9 shows me the full screen in galaga and some more. I
haven't tried 0.95 but it might work. BTW it seems to show the same in 480i 4:3
and
480p Widescreen.

Is the menu still cut off with a safearea of 1 though? (Once again, go to one
of the
control configuration menus to test it since those are huge.

yes it is still cut off at 1.0 In fact the very first menu with the list of
games is
already cut off at the top and bottom. I never saw the white rectangles around
each
sections at the top and bottom until I use 0.9. BTW I'm back to using component
cables but I tried both 4:3 and widescreen and it looks exactly the same.

you can always use the slider options in game? put vertical stretch on 930
(some games need horizental stretch to be set on 930 because of the cabinet)
