Gestures don't activate on Elementary OS desktop #224

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
If I try to use a 4-finger drag gesture over the desktop, touchegg spits out
the message "Failed to dispatch geis events." Works over other windows.

Confirming this issue on my elementary (Isis) install. Works fine when a window
is focused, but gestures do not register when no window is focused (for
example, a blank desktop with no windows open). I believe this is because of an
incompatibility with elementary's window manager, Gala.

Hi! Are you using the last SVN version? It is supposed that this issue is
solved:

Hi, thanks for the quick reply. I was not using the SVN version, but I just
downloaded and built it. Unfortunately it doesn't resolve my issue, which seems
to be similar to the bug you linked but not the same.

Specifically, the console output I see when I try to perform a gesture while my
cursor is over the desktop itself (not a window) is "Failed to dispatch geis
events". This is printed each time I try to perform a gesture on the desktop
itself. However, this line is also printed when I perform gestures
successfully. (In the latter case the whole "New gesture" log is printed
though).

How can I help track down this bug?

It looks very similar this 2 reports:
https://code.google.com/p/touchegg/issues/detail?id=98#c16
https://code.google.com/p/touchegg/issues/detail?id=175

Could you please copy here the output generated after doing a gesture over the
desktop please?

Just "Failed to dispatch geis events" and a couple "Warning: failed to get
previous touch value"

But like I said, I get all of those messages when I do gestures over a window
(and the gesture works correctly). The difference is that for gestures that
don't work correctly, I don't see this:

So, apart of the warning no trace is generated?

I'm sorry but I haven't got a Elementary desktop to try the bug. I'd be very
cool if you could paste the complete output of start Touchégg and perform a
gesture over the desktop in order to try to get an idea of what is happening.

Correct.

It is literally just the line "Failed to dispatch geis events". Is there any
sort of verbose/debug mode I can enable to generate more useful logs? This is
the full log generated when launching touchegg and performing the gesture over
the desktop:

~ $ touchegg
Reading config from  "/home/bumi/.config/touchegg/touchegg.conf"
Try to make a multitouch gesture. If everything goes well the information about
the gesture must appear
[+] Avaliable gesture:
     Name ->  Flick
[+] Avaliable gesture:
     Name ->  Drag
[+] Avaliable gesture:
     Name ->  Pinch
[+] Avaliable gesture:
     Name ->  Rotate
[+] Avaliable gesture:
     Name ->  Tap
[+] Avaliable gesture:
     Name ->  Touch
Failed to dispatch geis events

Probably is a uTouch problem getting gestures in the desktop window... I have
no idea to be honest, the most that I can do is try to install Elementary and
test the bug, but I have to say that it is a very low priority bug.

Thank you very much for your report!

Hi,

If you are using Unity you can not use Touchégg:
https://code.google.com/p/touchegg/wiki/FAQ

Unless you recompiled it:
https://code.google.com/p/touchegg/issues/detail?id=178#c8

Talking about Elementary OS, I installed it in a virtaul machi (amazing desktop
by the way) and I'm not able to receive any gesture, maybe somo lost package or
driver configuration?

I'm sorry but I don't have a linux box a the moment to do more testing...

Is there any intention of this bug being fixed? I'm not trying to be rude just
asking.
