Local authorities should ensure the full name of candidates are used otherwise it becomes difficult to identify gender - this matters because otherwise we don't have data to address the under-representation of women. it also helps tracking candidates across time, The year each ward was first established - again, important for historical analysis. This is NOT the same as simply indicating boundary changes - there are many wards that remain in place during boundary change implementation. Is there a code for tied elections? Is there a code to indicate countermanded elections? Would the results from a postponed election be entered as matter of course with the change of date clearly shown? Regarding by-elections the cause of the vacancy should be identified - resignation, disqualification, death of incumbent By-elections should also show the previous May election. Some thought should be given to how these files should be integrated with the existing database of local elections that dates from 1889.
