What I Do All Day

On this day, I want to share what my job is. It's a great job - I love it! But in some ways, it does not feel like a real job to me, at all. I work with words. Lots of folks do - they write books, or sing songs, or sell bad phone plans. My work is not just with words, but on words; I am in year two of my long path to a day that will let me add a word to my name. A small word, but it will mean so much to me when I have it!

So, words. What of them? Most of us use a good set of them all day, all week, all month, all year. We know how to use them, though most of us don't waste a thought on why they said this word and not that. (Of course, my nerd friends and I spend lots of time with talk of how we talk.) My task here is to find out how verbs, or do words as you might know them, can change if they are seen in a new set of word pals.

Think of a verb. No, not that one. Think of "to roll". What does this mean? Did you think of a round thing, on a path down a hill? Or did you think of a guy or girl, with a round thing in their hand, with a plan to throw that thing so that it will move on the ground in a straight line?

It seems clear to me that roll one is not too far from roll two. And so, I look for ways to say what "roll" means that will work for each of them.

And why? It's all part of a large plan to teach fake brains how to use words. I know, I know, there are more words in our speech than just "roll" and its mates. But - you have to start at some point!

I think it's worth my time to work on verbs. I mean, if we had no verbs, we would find it hard to say that things go on in the world. A world with no verbs would not move, not change, it would stay the way it is.

And then, why does my boss pay me to work on verbs? You can't put a price tag on a verb. Is my job a real job?? To tell you the truth, I'm not sure I care. As long as I can work on words and still buy all the bread and milk I need, I'm glad that my life is how it is.

A real job? Who cares! That's just how you roll.
