PERF do not make a copy when symmetrizing #202

This is experimental.

This saves another 10% in mdet run times since the copies are expensive. However, I am not sure I like the API and worry about side effects.

looking for guidance on this one @esheldon

I have better ideas for this one but am not going to do them now.
