There are 3 potential methods of performing master spectroscopic background subtraction for the MIRI MRS mode. One is the direct exposure-level subtraction of images in the calspec2 pipeline, the second is the creation and subtraction of a 1-D master background spectrum in the calspec3 pipeline, as is used for NIRSpec IFU observations (Jira JP-510) .
The third is a more sophisticated method, described as the "model-based" method, in which the background signal is fitted with polynomials in the 3-D space of background IFU cubes.
The first 2 methods will be implemented for the baseline pipeline in B7.3. The third (model-based) is categorized as an optimal enhancement and hence needs to be implemented post-B7.3.
