MIRI LRS fixed-slit master background subtraction: dedicated backgrounds #4

Open eslavichjgbot opened 4 years ago

Issue JP-522 was created on JIRA by Howard Bushouse:

Master spectroscopic background for MIRI LRS fixed-slit exposures can be done using dedicated (off-target) background exposures. The 1-D extracted spectra from one or more dedicated background exposures (x1d products from calspec2 processing) should be combined to form the master background spectrum and subtracted from the 2-D on-target LRS exposures.

Comment by Howard Bushouse on JIRA:

For the case of dedicated background exposures, the calwebb_spec2 background step should be used by default in the automated DMS pipeline, which will combine the dedicated background exposures into a 2-D background image, which is then subtracted from each target exposure. Hence the master background step should be skipped by default in the automated pipeline.
