superseeds https://github.com/esm-tools/esm_tools/pull/1124 that became obsolete as the HEAD is testing out ideas that were rejected.

As I have a functioning model that can run a few timesteps, it is time to revive this PR. Everything needs a thorough check. This feature has been developed over around a year.
