HA unresponsive after starting ESPHome device update #5853

The problem

When I start up update a ESPHome device, after approx 10-30sec HA gets unresponsive and is not reachable any more, MQTT shores offline. I could not figure out the root cause yet hypothesis:

esphome toolchain does something that crashes HA!?

after some time ~10min HA is up again my current problem is that I don't find the logs till that happens

There are now quite a few issues all have to do with ESP8266 variations (like wemos d1) that broke since 2024.5.x, you will need to downgrade to 2024.4.x for now. see #5820 , #5790 , #5816, #5851

finally, in #5790 there is a note that 5.4 fixed there issue. Not sure if it's the case as you seeing it in 5.5 - see https://github.com/esphome/issues/issues/5790#issuecomment-2134625297

The cause is most likely https://github.com/esphome/issues/issues/5857 which was fixed in ESPHome 2024.5.4 with change https://github.com/esphome/esphome/pull/6819.

2024.5.4 fixed my issue of no responsive

thx, I've updated ESPHome now. Did some updates (esphome device and addons) in parallel with (only) one HA freeze. I'll try to investigate if there is a relation to updating addons.

I'm still seeing freezes with the last few iterations of HA and ESPHome. Today with ESPHome version 2024.7.0 and HA 2024.7.2 (as VM) the same. A forced reboot of HA was required.

EDIT:

I believe the freeze always occurs updating from the following template: m5stack.atom-echo-voice-assistant: github://esphome/firmware/voice-assistant/m5stack-atom-echo.yaml@main
