The Checkpoint + Transition structure in the back end keeps all data for each transition. This is wasteful and not what we need, in general.

Add a "lightweight" Checkpoint that does not accumulate data.

Probably it makes more sense to just specify for each Transition whether or not it should keep data. There is no need to have a special Checkpoint type for this.
