Even though HNES adds a new way to collapse comment chains, HN already has one built-in. Moderators are able to "auto-collapse" a comment chain if they think a certain thread isn't on-topic or is otherwise unconstructive but do not want to go all the way and remove the discussion entirely.
Because HNES hides the default collapse/expand functionality, and is not aware of when a chain has been "auto-collapsed", there is not way to expand the chain.
This could probably be remediated by either removing HNES's collapse/expand functionality (not entirely sure why it has it's own), or somehow making HNES aware of when a chain has been auto-collapsed.
